Uterotone 3-in-1 Field Study: What 51 Animals Showed

Short answer: A multi-centre field study of Cattle Remedies Uterotone 3-in-1 in 51 dairy cows and buffaloes across seven Indian states has been published in the International Journal of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry. All 51 animals expelled the placenta within the normal time frame and showed normal lochial discharge, the 40 animals with usable milk records averaged an extra 541 ml/day in early lactation, and no adverse effects were reported. Equally important, and stated plainly here: the study had no control group, it was conducted and funded by us, and it therefore shows what happened — not what would have happened otherwise.

Why we are publishing the limitations alongside the results

Most product studies in this industry are presented as proof. This one is not proof, and saying so is not modesty — it is what the study design actually permits. We would rather you judged Uterotone 3-in-1 on an honest account of real field data than on a percentage pulled out of context.

What the study did

It was a prospective, multi-centre, open-label field study run between October 2025 and February 2026 across veterinary centres in Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

  • Animals: 51 in total — 32 cows, 8 buffaloes and 11 recorded without species specified.
  • Profile: mean age 5.07 ± 1.64 years (range 2–9), mean lactation number 2.50 ± 0.95 (range 1–5).
  • Protocol: 300 ml before the expected calving date, 300 ml at 12 hours after calving, then 300 ml/day for 2–4 days, with up to 900 ml/day in selected cases on veterinary assessment.
  • Exposure: mean treatment duration 3.56 ± 1.13 days; mean total dose 919 ± 310 ml, with 900 ml total being the most common regimen.
  • Recorded by field veterinarians: timeliness of placental expulsion, lochial discharge quality, change in daily milk yield, fat content, general health, and the attending veterinarian's assessment.

What it found

Uterine outcomes

All 51 animals (100%) expelled the placenta within the physiological time frame, and all showed normal lochial discharge, indicating satisfactory uterine clearance. Improvement in general wellness was recorded for all animals, and no adverse reactions were reported at any point.

Context for that first figure: retained foetal membranes are reported in roughly 5–15% of dairy cattle globally. In 51 animals you might expect somewhere between three and eight retentions. Seeing none is a genuinely interesting observation. It is not, on its own, evidence of an effect — without a comparison group we cannot know what this particular set of animals, on these particular farms, with veterinarians paying close attention, would have done anyway.

Milk yield

Usable milk yield data existed for 40 of the 51 animals. Among those, the mean increase in early lactation was 541 ± 386 ml/day, with a median and mode of 500 ml/day. The spread matters more than the average:

  • 100–300 ml/day: 11 animals (27.5%)
  • 301–500 ml/day: 18 animals (45.0%)
  • 501–800 ml/day: 7 animals (17.5%)
  • 801–1000 ml/day: 2 animals (5.0%)
  • Above 1000 ml/day: 2 animals (5.0%)

So the typical animal was around half a litre a day, not the two litres at the top of the range. Roughly 72% fell between 100 and 500 ml/day. Half a litre a day through early lactation is commercially meaningful on a smallholding, and we think it is more useful to tell you the median than to quote the maximum.

Milk fat and veterinarian assessment

Fat content improvement was reported in 45 of 51 cases (88.2%). All 51 participating field veterinarians expressed satisfaction with the clinical response and said they would recommend the product for peri-parturient use.

On that last figure, one honest caveat: veterinarian satisfaction in an open-label study where everyone knows what is being given is a measure of practical acceptance, not of efficacy. It tells you experienced practitioners found it workable and worth using. It does not control for expectation.

What the study cannot tell you

Set out plainly, because these limitations are real:

  • No control or placebo group. Without animals managed identically but without the product, improvement cannot be attributed to the product. This is the central limitation and it is not a small one.
  • Open-label. Veterinarians and farmers knew what was being administered, which can influence both management attention and subjective assessments such as "general wellness".
  • Milk yield came from farmer records, not metered measurement, and was unavailable for 11 of 51 animals. If records were more likely to be kept where something improved, the yield figure is optimistic.
  • Modest sample size and incomplete data. 51 animals, with 11 lacking species identification, age data for 45 and lactation data for 44.
  • Multi-centre variability. Spanning seven states improves generalisability but introduces differences in management, recording and animal type that were not standardised.

The authors' own conclusion is that controlled, randomised, blinded studies with larger samples and concurrent negative controls are warranted. That is the right next step and we intend to pursue it.

So what should a farmer or veterinarian take from it?

A fair reading is this. Across 51 animals in seven states, under ordinary farm conditions rather than research-station conditions, a short peri-parturient course of Uterotone 3-in-1 was followed by uncomplicated placental expulsion and clean uterine recovery in every case, a modest and consistent milk yield gain in early lactation, and no safety problems at a mean total dose of about 900 ml. Fifty-one experienced field veterinarians were satisfied enough to recommend continuing with it.

That is a reasonable basis for considering it as part of a transition-period programme. It is not a basis for expecting it to prevent retained placenta on its own, and no supportive formulation should be used that way. Frequently asked questions

Does this study prove Uterotone 3-in-1 prevents retained placenta?

No, and we would not claim it does. It shows that no retention occurred among 51 treated animals, which is a favourable observation against a 5–15% expected background rate. Proving prevention requires a randomised controlled trial with a concurrent untreated group, which this study did not have and which its authors recommend as the next step.

How much extra milk should a farmer realistically expect?

The median in this study was 500 ml/day in early lactation, with about 72% of animals between 100 and 500 ml/day. The top figure of 2000 ml/day was an outlier in two animals. Response varied with breed, parity, nutrition and baseline yield, so the median is the more honest planning number — and it comes from an uncontrolled study, so treat it as indicative rather than guaranteed.
