Dry Period Management for Dairy Cows & Buffaloes

Dry off a dairy cow or buffalo about 60 days before her expected calving date, stop milking abruptly rather than tapering off, and move her onto a low-energy, low-calcium dry-cow ration. How long should the dry period be?

The working rule

Aim for 55–65 days. Below 40 days the udder has not fully regenerated. Beyond 70–80 days the cow tends to get over-conditioned, which raises the risk of ketosis and fatty liver after calving.

Adjust for the individual animal

  • First-lactation heifers are still growing and generally benefit from the full 60 days, sometimes a little more.
  • Thin cows (body condition below about 2.5 on the 5-point scale) need the full dry period to rebuild reserves.
  • Over-conditioned cows should not be dried early — extending the dry period makes fat cows fatter.
  • Buffaloes follow the same 60-day principle. Because buffalo lactations are often shorter and calving intervals longer, the dry period is frequently allowed to stretch too far; watch body condition rather than the calendar alone.

Abrupt dry-off beats gradual tapering

Many farmers reduce milking to once a day, then every second day, believing it is kinder. In practice, slow tapering keeps the udder partially active and leaves the teat canal open longer, which extends the window during which environmental bacteria can enter.

The better approach is abrupt cessation: milk her out completely at the final milking and then stop. Support it by cutting concentrate and green fodder for two to three days before dry-off so milk production is already falling. Do not restrict drinking water — that is an old practice that does more harm than good.

If a cow is still yielding more than about 10–12 litres a day, drop her concentrate and shift her to dry roughage for four or five days first, so that abrupt cessation does not leave the udder painfully engorged.

Udder care at dry-off

The first two weeks after dry-off and the last two weeks before calving are when the udder is most vulnerable to new infections. Milk the cow out fully at the last milking, disinfect each teat end, and use a post-milking teat dip. The goal here is maintenance, not gain. Good-quality dry roughage with limited concentrate is usually enough.   • Milking until calving. The most costly error. No dry period means a markedly weaker next lactation.
