Age at First Calving: Getting Heifers Bred on Time

Age at first calving is the age at which a heifer delivers her first calf, and it is one of the clearest profit levers on an Indian dairy farm. Well-grown crossbred heifers can calve at 24–30 months, buffalo and indigenous heifers usually at 36–42 months. What actually decides the date is body weight, not the calendar: breed her when she reaches roughly 60–65% of mature body weight, and she should calve at about 85%.

Why age at first calving matters so much

Every month a heifer stands in the shed without calving, she eats, needs housing and labour, and earns nothing. She only starts repaying that investment after her first calving. Two heifers of the same genetics — one calving at 28 months, one at 40 — differ by a year of feed cost and a year of lost milk, and that gap compounds across her productive life.

Calving on time also lifts lifetime yield. Heifers that calve close to the target age and weight tend to have longer productive lives and better first-lactation persistency than those calved very late, because they enter the herd with the frame and condition to handle lactation.

The opposite error is real too: breeding an underweight heifer just because she is old enough leads to calving difficulty, small calves, poor first lactation and slow return to heat.

Target ages for Indian herds

  • Crossbred cows (HF and Jersey crosses): first calving at 24–30 months, from breeding at about 15–18 months.
  • Indigenous cattle (Gir, Sahiwal, Tharparkar and similar): first calving commonly at 36–42 months; well-managed herds achieve the lower end.
  • Buffalo (Murrah, Mehsana, Jaffarabadi): first calving typically 36–42 months, from breeding at roughly 27–33 months.

Nationally, average age at first calving in India remains well above these targets on most smallholdings — almost always because of underfeeding during rearing rather than genetics.

Body weight beats the calendar

Use these working benchmarks rather than age alone:

  • Breed at ~60–65% of mature body weight. For a crossbred heifer whose mature weight is around 450 kg, that is roughly 270–290 kg.
  • Calve at ~85% of mature body weight. Roughly 380–400 kg for the same animal.
  • Height at withers is a useful cross-check where a weighband is unavailable — a heifer that is tall but thin needs energy, not more time.

If you do not have a weighbridge, a girth tape (heart-girth weighband) is inexpensive and accurate enough for management decisions. Weigh or tape every heifer monthly and write it down; a growth record is the single most useful piece of paper in a heifer shed. Pair it with regular body condition scoring.

The growth plan, stage by stage

Birth to 3 months

The foundation is colostrum and early rumen development. Feed adequate good-quality colostrum within the first hours of life, then offer clean calf starter from the first week to develop the rumen papillae. Growth lost here is rarely recovered. 3 to 12 months

This is where most Indian heifers fall behind. The animal is off milk, not yet productive, and quietly gets the poorest fodder on the farm. Aim for steady daily gain on good green fodder plus a measured concentrate allowance; target roughly 500–700 g/day for crossbreds. 12 months to breeding

Keep gain steady and monitor for heat. Avoid over-fattening in this window: excessive body fat deposited in the developing udder reduces future milk yield. Condition should be firm and well-grown, not fat.

Breeding to calving

Continue growth — a pregnant heifer must grow herself and her calf. Restrict energy in the last month only to the extent needed to avoid an over-fat heifer and a difficult calving, and follow sound transition period management in the final six weeks.

Why heifers fail to reach puberty on time

  • Chronic underfeeding — the most common cause by far, especially through the lean months before the monsoon.
  • Internal parasites and liver fluke, which drain nutrients and depress appetite.
  • Trace mineral deficiency — phosphorus, zinc, copper, cobalt, manganese and selenium all bear on cyclicity. Signs of deficiency are covered in our post on mineral deficiency in cattle.
  • Heat stress in summer, which suppresses feed intake and heat expression.
  • Missed heats — heifers show shorter, quieter heats than cows, and are often housed away from the observation routine.

Heat detection and breeding the heifer

Observe heifers at least twice daily, ideally early morning and late evening when animals are calm. Watch for standing to be mounted (the definitive sign), clear stringy mucus discharge, restlessness, bellowing and reduced feed intake. Use the AM/PM rule as a practical guide: a heifer seen in standing heat in the morning is inseminated the same evening; one seen in the evening is inseminated the next morning.

Feeding and supplement support

Get the basics right first: adequate green fodder, a measured concentrate, clean water available at all times, and shade. Then close the predictable gaps:

Five mistakes that push age at first calving up

  1. Feeding heifers whatever is left after the milking herd is fed.
  2. Not weighing or taping — managing by appearance alone.
  3. Observing heat only in the milking herd, so heifer heats are missed.
  4. Breeding on age when the heifer is well below target weight, then facing dystocia and a poor first lactation.
  5. Skipping deworming and mineral supplementation during the 3–12 month growth window.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good age at first calving for a crossbred cow in India?

24–30 months is a realistic and profitable target for a well-grown HF or Jersey crossbred, which means first insemination at about 15–18 months. Achieving it depends almost entirely on how the heifer is fed from three months to breeding.

Is it harmful to breed a heifer too early?

Yes, if she is underweight. Breeding on age alone, before she reaches roughly 60–65% of mature body weight, raises the risk of calving difficulty, a weak calf, a disappointing first lactation and delayed return to heat. Breed on weight, and let age follow.

My buffalo heifer is 30 months old and has not shown heat. What should I do?

First tape her weight and score her condition — most such cases are simply underweight animals that have not reached puberty. Also rule out parasites and mineral deficiency. If she is at target weight, well grown and still not cycling by around 30–33 months, have a veterinarian examine her reproductive tract for a developmental abnormality or persistent anestrus before spending further on supplements.
