Short answer: Water is the most under-managed nutrient on Indian dairy farms. A lactating cow needs roughly 4–5 litres of water for every litre of milk she produces, on top of maintenance needs — commonly 80–150 litres a day, and considerably more in hot weather. If water is dirty, warm, salty or simply too far away, cows drink less, eat less dry matter and give less milk. Fixing water access and trough hygiene is usually the cheapest yield improvement available to a farm.
Why water limits milk before feed does
Milk is roughly 87% water. Water intake and dry matter intake are tightly linked: a cow that drinks less eats less, because rumen function depends on adequate fluid. This is why a herd on excellent ration but poor water access underperforms. Per unit of body weight, a high-yielding dairy cow has one of the highest water requirements of any land mammal.
How much do they actually need?
- Lactating cows: approximately 4–5 litres of water per litre of milk, plus maintenance. A cow giving 20 litres commonly drinks 100 litres or more per day.
- Dry cows and heifers: substantially less, but still 30–50 litres a day depending on size and weather.
- Hot weather: intake can rise by 50% or more. During a heat wave, water is the single most important intervention.
- Feed moisture matters: animals on lush green fodder draw part of their water from feed; those on dry fodder and concentrate need far more from the trough.
Note that a large share of daily intake happens in a short window right after milking and after feeding. If the trough refills slowly, cows are effectively rationed at exactly the moment they want to drink most.
Judging water quality on your farm
The practical test
The simplest check: would you be willing to drink it? Beyond that, watch for these problem indicators.
- Salinity / total dissolved solids (TDS): water below about 1,000 ppm TDS is comfortably safe for dairy cattle. Between roughly 1,000 and 3,000 ppm animals usually adapt but intake and performance may suffer. Higher than that, and you can expect refusal, loose dung and depressed yield. Borewell water in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat and peninsular India can be well above these levels — get it tested.
- Sulphates: high sulphate causes scouring and reduces intake, and interferes with copper and selenium absorption.
- Nitrates: can come from fertiliser or manure runoff into shallow wells. High nitrate is a genuine toxicity risk and is also linked to reproductive problems.
- Iron and manganese: not usually toxic, but they taste bad, stain troughs and reduce voluntary intake.
- Bacterial contamination: coliforms from manure runoff — the main monsoon concern.
A basic water test through a state agricultural university or district laboratory is inexpensive and worth doing once, especially for a new borewell.
Monsoon: the highest-risk season for water
Farmers often assume abundant water means safe water. The opposite is usually true during the rains.
- Surface runoff carries dung, urine and soil into open wells, ponds and shallow bores. This is a common route for coliform scours and for leptospirosis.
- Standing water in and around troughs breeds mosquitoes and flies.
- Troughs develop algal slime and biofilm faster in warm, humid weather; biofilm both harbours bacteria and puts cows off drinking.
- Overhead tanks that are never cleaned accumulate sediment and organic load.
Monsoon water checklist
- Scrub and drain troughs at least twice a week during the rains — visibly clean is the standard, not merely full.
- Bund or raise the area around wells and bore heads so runoff cannot enter.
- Cover overhead storage tanks and clean them out before and after the monsoon.
- Site troughs so that spilled water drains away rather than forming a muddy wallow at the shed entrance — that mud is a mastitis and lameness risk in its own right.
- Never let animals drink from stagnant ponds if you can avoid it.
Getting access right
- Provide enough trough space that subordinate animals are not blocked by dominant ones — bullying at the water point is a real and underestimated cause of uneven yield in a tied or loose-housed herd.
- Keep water available continuously rather than at fixed times. Restricted watering suppresses both intake and yield.
- Place a water source close to the feeding area and close to the milking exit.
- In summer, shade the trough. Cattle drink noticeably less from water that has been standing in the sun.
When water problems show up as health problems
Poor water quality often presents as something else: persistent loose dung across several animals, dropping milk yield with no ration change, poor feed intake, or repeated digestive upsets after a change of water source. Before reaching for medication, check the water.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if my cows are not drinking enough?
Look for firm, dry dung, reduced feed intake, sunken appearance around the eyes, and milk yield that drifts down without a ration change. Watching the herd for ten minutes after milking is informative: if cows crowd the trough and it empties or runs dry, your supply rate is the bottleneck.
Does water temperature matter?
Yes. Cattle drink less from water that is very hot or very cold. In Indian summers, water standing in an exposed tank or black pipe can get genuinely hot; shading storage and troughs improves intake at no running cost.
Should I add anything to the drinking water?
As a routine practice, no — clean water is the goal. Electrolytes or specific supplements in water may be advised in particular situations such as heat stress or rehydration of scouring calves, but this should be on veterinary advice.
