Red or coffee-coloured urine in a cow or buffalo is most often caused by babesiosis — tick fever or red water — a tick-borne blood parasite that destroys red blood cells. It is a veterinary emergency: the animal runs a high fever, becomes weak and anaemic, and can die within days if not treated early. If you see red urine, call your veterinarian immediately and start tick control across the whole herd.
Babesiosis is caused by single-celled Babesia parasites — mainly Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis in India — that are injected when infected Rhipicephalus (cattle) ticks feed. The parasites multiply inside red blood cells and burst them. The freed haemoglobin spills into the urine, giving the red-to-brown colour farmers call red water. High-yielding crossbred cows are usually hit harder than indigenous cattle, and cases rise in warm, humid weather — during and just after the monsoon.
Red urine has other causes too, such as true blood in the urine from cystitis or stones (haematuria), post-parturient haemoglobinuria from phosphorus deficiency, or bacillary haemoglobinuria. Only a vet can confirm babesiosis, usually with a blood-smear test. Do not inject random medicines on your own.
Babesiosis responds well to prompt, specific treatment by a veterinarian (a babesicidal drug such as diminazene or imidocarb), often with supportive care — fluids, and in severe anaemia a blood transfusion. The earlier treatment begins, the better the survival.
